Foundation Workshop
Hands. Thread. A Simple Circle.
(Black thread on white fabric)
Purpose
This first workshop is an invitation to slow down and arrive through making.
It’s designed to help you reconnect with your hands, your breath and the rhythm of stitch, creating space for awareness to emerge gently through cloth and thread.
There’s no right way to work here.
Some people find they create something they want to keep, display or share. Others value the experience of making more than the finished piece.
Both are welcome.
Whether what you make feels like artwork is entirely your choice.
Materials
You’ll need:
white cotton fabric (an old sheet is perfect)
black embroidery thread
embroidery needle
round embroidery hoop
scissors
Simple materials are part of the process.
No colour decisions.
No decorative pressure.
Just cloth, thread and your hands.
Why black thread on white fabric
This simplicity is intentional.
Working with black thread on white fabric removes distraction and allows attention to settle on:
movement
rhythm
edge
line
space
Every stitch becomes visible.
Every pause leaves a trace.
The fabric quietly records how you work — where you slow down, where you hesitate, where you move freely.
This approach echoes foundation practices in art and design, where materials are kept simple so awareness can develop through the hands.
It also supports beginners emotionally.
There’s no expectation to make something beautiful.
You’re simply invited to make marks.
And if something beautiful emerges, that matters too.
